This calculator provides an estimate for guidance only and is not a religious ruling (fatwa). Zakat is due on wealth held for a full lunar year (hawl).
Frequently asked questions
Who can receive Zakat?
As stated in the Holy Qur'an, Zakat is given to the poor, the needy, those in debt, stranded travellers, those whose freedom is restricted, those whose hearts are to be reconciled to Islam, and those who work in the way of God. Zakat is not given to one's parents, spouse or children.
How is Zakat calculated?
After deducting your debts from your total assets (gold, foreign currency, cash, trade goods), if the remaining amount exceeds the nisab threshold (80.18 g of gold), 2.5% (one fortieth) of that amount is calculated as Zakat.
What is the nisab?
The nisab is the measure of wealth. To be considered wealthy in religious terms and be liable for Zakat, one must own 80.18 grams of gold, or savings equivalent to it, beyond basic needs and debts.
When is Zakat paid?
Zakat is due on wealth that has reached the nisab once one lunar year (354 days) has passed over it. Giving it in the month of Ramadan has become customary, but it may be given at any time of the year.
Can I pay Zakat by credit card?
Yes, Zakat can be paid by credit card; the card is only a means of payment. For the payment options currently available, use the donate button at the end of our calculator or visit the Donate page.
Which possessions are not subject to Zakat?
Zakat is not due on basic needs (Havaic-i Asliye) such as the home you live in, a private car, household goods, clothing and the tools of your trade.
